Christopher Nkunku’s first words as an RB Leipzig player after missing out on Arsenal move

Bundesliga side Red Bull Leipzig have confirmed the signing of midfielder Christopher Nkunku from Paris Saint-Germain in a €15m deal.

The French U21 international was reportedly on the radar of Unai Emery and Arsenal, but has now signed a four-year deal with the German side.

The Gunners were heavily linked with the 21-year-old during the January 2018 transfer window, with the player's agent confirming the club's interest in his client, although he did admit that conversations were 'complicated'.

It was thought that Emery and Arsenal would return again during the summer to try and sign the midfielder, but they have been beaten to the punch by Leipzig, who confirmed the capture on Thursday.

Upon his unveiling, Nkunku spoke of his delight at joining the Bundesliga club.

"I'm overjoyed to be a RB Leipzig player. I've heard a lot about the club and I'm convinced that the way they play football here suits me very well," the player said (via the club's social media channel )

Jack Wilshere speaks to football.london about Arsenal's transfer targets

"I had very good discussions with RB Leipzig officials and already looked around the training centre. Young players are given the chance to develop further and that's why I'm happy to be here."

"I'm a very attacking player. I like having the ball and want to make my mark on games by scoring or assisting and supporting my teammates. I want to be successful, together with the team and the club."

RB Leipzig's Sporting Director Markus Krosch revealed why they made their move for the player.

"We're very happy of course that Christopher decided to join us and we could agree on a fee with PSG," he said. "He will offer our team a lot of flexibility in attack and possesses an incredible amount of potential."

Arsenal meanwhile are looking to complete their second deal of the summer, with Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba close to confirming a move to the Emirates Stadium.
