Christopher Jullien close to Celtic deal as Neil Lennon makes David Turnbull transfer statement

Neil Lennon has confirmed Celtic are close to signing Toulouse defender Christopher Jullien - and insists a deal for David Turnbull hasn't been written off.

Record Sport told on Tuesday night how the Hoops had agreed a fee for the towering centre-back after talks with the Ligue 1 side.

The former France U-20 stopper is now close to becoming Lennon's first summer signing but Turnbull's situation remains more complicated.

Celtic hoped to unveil the Motherwell midfielder last week but issues arose during his medical that means both clubs have now returned to the negotiating table.

Lennon told Sky Sports: "(Jullien) is close, yeah.

"It’s a player that we’ve identified for a long time, even before my time here, hopefully we can get that one over the line soon.

"Yeah, we are still in negotiation (over Turnbull). Obviously there has been a little bit of a hitch on the medical side of things but both clubs are still in negotiation."

Asked if the club had written off the transfer, Lennon replied: "Absolutely not, no."

His side opened their pre-season campaign with a 6-1 rout of Austrian fourth tier side Pinkafeld earlier on Wednesday.

Leigh Griffiths found the net on his return from an extended break to deal with personal issues, and Lennon told the striker he should be hugely pleased with his progress.

The Celtic boss told Celtic TV : "He was, in the main, very good.

"His setplays weren't great but that'll come with gametime. He gets a goal from two yards, I love those.

"He's the kind of guy who can get you those kind of goals.

"Leigh should be delighted with himself."
