Christopher Eccleston’s assertion that the “stage door is shut to poor children” (Report, 21 August) is in some ways correct. There are often significant obstacles faced by young people who aspire to become actors (and arguably anything else) in the current climate, particularly those looking to train and work in our capital. Our industry can’t afford to deter the brightest and best, and we should do everything we can to encourage new talent regardless of income or background. Lamda is one of the world’s leading drama schools because our students are the best, not because they or their parents have deep pockets. Over 20% of our students receive financial support through scholarships and bursaries, and indeed some of the UK’s rising stars such as Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games) and David Oyelowo (The Butler) received scholarships during their time at Lamda. It is vital that we maintain this diversity so that the UK’s cultural scene will continue to thrive.
