Christopher Biggins announces he's had open heart surgery and jokes he's a 'bionic man'

Christopher Biggins has revealed that he's had open heart surgery.

The 72-year-old joked he's like a "bionic man" after having a new valve inserted into his heart following a recent health scare.

He said he's also had surgery to give him a new knee recently.

The I'm A Celebrity star told The Sun : "I’m like the bionic man. I’ve had a new knee put in and I’ve had a new valve put into my heart. It’s not easy getting old."

The panto legend, who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2010, added: "As you get older, the things you go to – apart from restaurants and theatres – are funerals and memorial services.

"It makes you aware that life is very shallow. It’s not easy. You never know when you’re going to go."

Biggins also admitted he was "always aware" of his weight and that he'd often try diets to lose weight.

He recently said goodbye to his close friend Dame Barbara Windsor, who sadly lost her battle with dementia in December last year.

And he said earlier this year that she'll be getting a huge send off in 2022, with plans to hold a celebration of her dazzling life and career.

Her funeral had to be held under strict coronavirus restrictions, and Biggins said that in normal times, the streets would have been lined by fans wishing to pay their respects.

He told The Sun at the time: "Sadly I think this is going to go on until 2023 before we go back to complete normality but let’s hope that at the end of this year or the beginning of 2022 we really can send her [Barbara] off in a big way.

"Normally we could have filled Wembley Stadium with people who would have wanted to say goodbye. The streets would have been lined."

He also said of the wake: "To play to 29 people who were sad and upset, it was very difficult to get the odd laugh here and there. And of course, you had to have a laugh because Barbara was a funny woman."
