Christophe dies aged 74 as singer loses battle with lung disease

Christophe died aged 74 after the singer battled with emphysema.

The French singer was rushed to hospital on March 26 in Paris, France.

As time moved on, he was transferred to the city of Brest, in Brittany.

Emphysema is a medical condition where the air sacs of the lungs have been damaged to cause breathlessness in a person.

The singer was survived by his wife Véronique Bevilacqua and daughter Lucie.

They broke the sad news with a powerful statement.

The family said his death had stunned them into silence as they didn't know what to say.

The statement read: "Christophe left. Despite the unfailing dedication of the medical teams, his forces abandoned him.

"Today, the words are falling apart … and all the long speeches are indeed futile."

Local French newspaper LeParisien reported the singer had tested positive for coronavirus after going into hospital in a report on March 29.

It has not yet been confirmed or denied by his representative whether the star had contracted coronavirus.

His family made no reference to the virus from their statement and stated the singer had died after losing his battle to a respiratory illness.

Christophe rocketed to the heights of fame in the 60s when he released ballad Aline.

It proved to be one of his most famous and well known tracks.

The singer also wowed fans with his hit Les Mots Bleus.

His last album Les Vestiges du Chaos hit the shelves in 2016, around four years ago.
