Christophe Berra to leave Hearts as Robbie Neilson pays glowing tribute to 'great servant'

Hearts defender Christophe Berra is set to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

The 36-year-old returned to Tynecastle after being signed by former boss Ian Cathro in 2017, having previously started his professional career in Gorgie between 2003 and 2009.

However, after a season in which the Championship favourites have received much criticism for poor performances and dismal cup exits to Alloa and Brora Rangers, Berra will depart the club in June.

The past two terms have been difficult for the 41-time Scotland international as he was shipped out on loan to Dundee in the second half of last season by Daniel Stendel and has at times struggled for minutes in the second tier.

But manager Robbie Neilson, who played alongside the centre-back in his first spell at the club, paid tribute to a man he described as a "great servant" to Hearts.

He said: "I’ve been fortunate enough to play alongside Christophe as well as manage him and he has been a great servant to this club.

"You don’t play more than 250 first team games without being a top player and there will be an opportunity for him to add to that number before this season is out.

"He’ll remain focused and continue to give his all as we look to get the Championship title clinched, then we can look back and appreciate all that he has done for this club."
