Christophe Berra's Hearts departure confirmed as Robbie Neilson pays tribute

Christophe Berra will leave Hearts when his contract expires this summer.

The central defender has decided to move on after discussions with manager Robbie Neilson and brings to an end his second spell in maroon.

Berra has 241 appearances for the Tynecastle club after breaking through from the youth team in the early 200s.

He’s spent 11 years as a Jambo across two spells after returning as captain on a free transfer in 2017.

That was after a decade playing in England for Wolves and Ipswich Town.

After a highly impressive first season back, Berra suffered a serious hamstring injury at the start of the 2018/19 campaign that kept him out of action for three months, and struggled to recapture his pre-injury form.

His time at the club looked to be over in January 2020 after he was frozen out by Daniel Stendel and sent to train with the reserves.

He escaped via a loan move to Dundee but his time at Dens was cut short when Covid meant Scottish football was plunged into cold storage.

He was back in the fold after Neilson returned to Tynecastle in the summer, but another injury delayed the start of his season and Berra has spent most of his time on the bench since.

Nielsen said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to play alongside Christophe as well as manage him and he has been a great servant to this club.

“You don’t play more than 250 first team games without being a top player and there will be an opportunity for him to add to that number before this season is out.

“He’ll remain focused and continue to give his all as we look to get the Championship title clinched, then we can look back and appreciate all that he has done for this club.”
