Christmas warning - 20 things that have shot up in price including clothes and gadgets

Price experts have revealed 20 things that have become more expensive in the run up to Black Friday and Christmas.

Shoppers are being urged to always compare prices so they don’t fall for a dud deal ahead of the most expensive time of the year.

It comes as the UK is in the middle of a cost of living crisis with energy prices soaring and warnings that council tax bills could rise.

Experts are saying soaring energy prices could send Brits' annual bills past £2,000 for the first time, while there are fears council tax could rise by £100 per year for the next three years.

The new Bank of England chief economist Huw Pill has also warned high rates of inflation could last longer than expected due to on-going supply chain issues.

UK inflation made its biggest jump on record in August with the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measurement rising to 3.2% in August, up from 2% in July.

But Mr Pill he said the rise would only be temporary and is likely to fall over time.

The CPI is what is used to measure average changes in prices over time that consumers pay for goods and services.

20 things that are more expensive now

PriceSpy has highlighted examples of 20 specific items that are more expensive in October compared to September.

Its experts say these rises are likely to be down to a combination of inflation but also retailers reacting to Black Friday and the anticipated surge in demand.

Of course, prices do naturally rise and fall over time and sales will also slash costs.

Shops can also set their own prices and don't have to stick to the recommended retail price (RRP).

But this data serves as a reminder to always check prices before you buy anything to make sure you're getting the best deal.

PriceSpy UK country manager, Ossie Bayram, said: “We've seen in previous years when inflation was low, prices around this time do often tend to rise, so this is following the trend of recent years.

“Our statistics in fact show that close to 30% of the products in our most popular categories cost more on Black Friday 2020 compared to 14 days earlier.

"However, this year, there's the added impact of inflation and supply chain issues, which are ultimately pushing up costs for retailers and therefore prices.”

With both Black Friday and Christmas fast approaching, it's even more important not to get sucked into the hype of the upcoming sales season, he said.

Mr Bayram continued: "We don't expect to see the shortages seen at the start of the pandemic, with retailers already preparing for the seasonal rush and improving their online services since the start of the pandemic.

"However, with demand set to be high, it's important for consumers not to get sucked in and panic during this period.

"Taking the time to shop around online will help you see what's in stock across multiple retailers and get the best prices."
