Christmas songs banned on UK radio station

A radio station has sacked off Santa by banning Christmas songs this festive season.

The Fox, which broadcasts in the Cotswolds, is believed to be the first UK radio station to refuse to play seasonal favourites by the likes of Slade, Wizzard, Shakin' Stevens and Mud.

Nik Fox, station manager of The Fox, said: “We think everybody will get sick of Jingle Bells, Slade, and worn out Christmas nonsense when they’re in the shops.

"And they really don’t need commercial radio stations ramming the festive season down their throat as well."

He added: "Our competitors have gone as far as to launch stations like 'Heart Extra Christmas' which is playing nothing but Christmas songs, so if people want that kind of thing its out there.

"But for the large number of people who would rather not feel like they’re living in Lapland, we’re offering a safe alternative.”

The festive song ban has met with a mixed response from listeners.

One said: "I will definitely tune in.

"Christmas lasts eight weeks in this country; radio and TV are repetitive."

However, another said: "Music may well be in the shops, but for those that are housebound, in care homes et cetera, they enjoy listening to things on radio.

"Surely the answer is to have it, but in moderation; then hopefully everyone is happy."
