Christmas preparations begin for Northumberland artist despite market cancellations

Christmas preparations are underway at a Northumberland artist's garden studio, despite the cancellation of almost all festive market bookings.

Nadine Sutterby, from Haydon Bridge, had a diary full of Christmas market bookings this year, selling gifts inspired by local wildlife.

But the coronavirus pandemic has led to the cancellation of all but one of the markets she was due to attend this winter.

Nadine, 47, said: "Christmas is normally a very busy time for me but things are so different this year with Covid-19 so I've had to look at new ways to work.

"I would normally attend around ten Christmas markets, but just about all of them have been cancelled this year and at the moment only one is still going ahead."

The cancellations are another blow for Nadine, who has already lost space in shops in Scotland and Northern England where her work was being sold.

The mum-of-two prides herself on creating "affordable art", adding "I believe everyone should have the opportunity to display original artwork in their home."

And as preparations begin for the festive season, Nadine is determined to stand by her ethos as she trials new ways of selling her work, using Facebook to host a series of online markets.

Nadine added: "I think this year we will see even more people shopping online for Christmas presents, as people might avoid the shops and some might be put off if they have to wear a mask.

"So I thought I would put more focus into selling online through my website and Facebook craft fairs."

Through the events, Nadine will sell her Christmas products, such as eco-friendly Christmas cards and will also feature some of her most popular prints including Wilbur the highland cow and her "adorable" bumble bee print.

Her passion for painting animals has also inspired her to take orders for pet portraits, which she perfects over the course of two weeks.

Nadine added: "I love creating animal portraits as there's so much expression in their faces, which I take the time to portray in my work.

"When someone asks for a portrait of their pet, no matter what animal it is, I will take the time to really study their eyes as it creates a window into their personality. It's so important to show that when you're creating artwork of someones beloved pet."

Despite the huge challenges created due to the coronavirus pandemic, Nadine is determined to continue working from her purpose built studio in her garden.

From the comfort of her home studio, she has created prints which now hang in homes around the world, including America, Australia and New Zealand.

Nadine added: "It's amazing to know my work has reached people all over the world, I think that's the dream for any artist."
