Christmas panic buyers hit Ayrshire supermarkets as fears grow over festive food shortage

Panic-buying shoppers are hitting Ayrshire's supermarkets this morning as fears grow over empty shelves this Christmas.

The rush is on to buy groceries following news of a French ban on British hauliers at the ports.

The country closed their borders to UK travellers from 11pm last night as large parts of England went into Tier 4 lockdown in response to the new mutant Covid strain.

And that has sparked concerns that vital supplies won't reach the supermarkets in time for festive dinners.

However, both UK and French officials have this morning insisted inbound freight WILL continue after agreeing a deal to keep the port traffic open.

It comes as large queues have been pictured snaking around supermarket car parks in Ayrshire from early this morning as shoppers try to beat the rush.

But one leading supermarket insists the traditional Christmas dinner won't be under threat as supplies are already in the country.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said: "All products for the Great British Christmas lunch are already in the country and we have plenty of these.

"We are also sourcing everything we can from the UK and looking into alternative transport for product sourced from Europe.

'If nothing changes, we will start to see gaps over the coming days on lettuce, some salad leaves, cauliflowers, broccoli and citrus fruit - all of which are imported from the Continent at this time of year.

"We hope the UK and French governments can come to a mutually agreeable solution that prioritises the immediate passage of produce and any other food at the ports."

Food and Drink Federation chief executive, Ian Wright, added: "Continental truckers will not want to travel here if they have a real fear of getting marooned."
