'Christmas not a time to mourn': NT Police issue road safety appeal after fatal crash

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit will probe the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A 36-year-old man has died after being hit by a 4WD on the Roper Highway near the NT's Mataranka township overnight.

The car which was travelling west on the highway at the time.

The driver stopped to assist the man, taking him to a clinic in Matranka, but he was declared dead just after 8:00pm.

NT Police said they had secured a crime scene on the highway, and detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit were travelling to the location today to begin an investigation of the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said motorists need to take great care on the roads in the lead-up to the holiday season.

"Tragically, we are seeing a repeat of 2019, in terms of fatalities in December," he said.

"Christmas is a time for families to get together and should not be a time to mourn the loss of a loved one.

"Please take great care on the road."

The incident came after a 20-year-old man was charged over a serious crash in Katherine last week which left four people injured, two critically.

The car involved in the incident has been seized by police.

The driver has returned a negative result for alcohol, and has taken a blood test for any drugs.

Anyone who may have information that can assist investigators is being urged to call NT Police.
