Christmas lockdown talks to continue as concerns rise about easing restrictions

Four nation talks on the Christmas lockdown easing plan are to continue after no decision was reached at a high level summit.

Calls are growing to scrap a plan critics believe could lead to more lives being lost.

Under the current UK-wide agreement, eight people from three households will be able to mix indoors between December 23 and 27.

Following calls by experts for a rethink, Nicola Sturgeon said there is a "case" for looking at whether the flexibilities could be tightened.

However, talks between the UK Government and devolved administrations did not lead to an outcome.

Any changes in Scotland may relate to messaging, rather than the number of people in a Christmas bubble or the time period that has been agreed.

Following the meeting, a spokeswoman for Northern Ireland First Minister said: “Following this evening’s call with counterparts in England, Scotland and Wales, ministers will discuss the current situation with medical and scientific advisers.

“It is expected that an update will be brought to the Executive on Thursday.”
