Christmas lights set to sparkle this Sunday

An afternoon of musical entertainment will fill the air when Prestwick switches on its Christmas lights on Sunday.

The main stage will be set up at Prestwick Cross and will feature school choirs, ABBA Dreams, Memphis, a Michael Buble tribute act (Nick McCann) and Gee Gee Wilson and Tony Andrews.

Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra will play in St Nicholas Church from 2.45pm to 3.30pm while Ayrshire Voices will preview their Christmas concert programme in the South Church Hall from 3pm to 4.30pm.

Prestwick Main Street will be closed to traffic from 7am to 9pm with all buses diverted.

Organisers Love Prestwick Business Association are promising an event that will be “worthy of such a great town.”

Stalls will be set up along the Main Street and manned by local businesses and voluntary organisations while a Christmas market will be held in Boydfield Gardens and a funfair in Station Road.

Santa’s Super Grotto is also planned while Prestwick Rotary will hold a charity bottle stall and sell off Old Prestwick photographs from their exhibition.

Santa will be driven along the Main Street before switching on the festive lights shortly after 5pm.

Children from schools across Prestwick were challenged to design a poster to promote the event, with Erin Swallow of Glenburn Primary crowned the winner.

She will ride with Santa in the fire engine to turn on the lights display at the event.

Much of last year’s event was called off at the last minute due to safety concerns by Police Scotland and South Ayrshire Council.

In a programme message, Love PBA chair Ainsley Hunter said: “We are keen that we should not be deprived of our popular community party for another year.

“To that end, we have assembled a variety of activities and performances that will provide an event that is worthy of such a great town as Prestwick.

“I would urge people to come out and support Love PBA in their efforts to create a fun but safe Lighting Up experience as possible.”
