Christmas lights go up in Nottingham but no decision yet about switch-on

Goose Fair was cancelled, so is bonfire night and it's looking like the most wonderful time of the year won't be such a spectacular affair in Nottingham this year.

The festive lights have gone up in Old Market Square and across the city centre, in Albert Street, Angel Row, Friar Lane and Exchange Walk.

But there won't be a traditional crowd-pulling Christmas switch-on of years gone by.

Talks are on-going to determine whether there will be a low-key ceremony similar to last year which saw a performance by ice dancers from the National Ice Centre and the Sheriff and Lord Mayor of Nottingham turn on the tree lights.

But with social distancing in place and Nottingham in Tier 3 during November, the festive extravaganza could be even more understated this year.

The switch-on traditionally coincides with the official opening Winter Wonderland in Slab Square but much depends on whether the annual spectacular with the ice rink, log cabins selling gifts, bars and food stalls is able to go ahead.

A decision is expected by Nottingham City Council on November 6.

An alternative event has been planned at Wollaton Park, which will be transformed into an illuminated trail with light, fire and sound through a fairy-lit woodland into the festive forest and onto a magical realm awash with colour.

Christmas switch-on events have already been cancelled across Broxtowe borough.
