Christmas lights are up in Nottingham city centre

Goosey - the Goose Fair goose - has only just flown from her perch on the Mansfield Road roundabout, the giant Jack-o'-lantern has yet to land in Old Market Square for Halloween and there's still plenty of time to stock up on sparklers ahead of Bonfire Night...

Yet with more than two months to go, Christmas has already hit Nottingham city centre.

Crimbo lights are now up in Friar Lane, Angel Row and Long Row, in preparation for the big festive switch-on next month.

Details have yet to be confirmed for the Yuletide spectacular which also marks the opening of the annual Winter Wonderland - but visitors can expect the familiar sights of Slab Square's 60ft grand fir Christmas tree, decked out with 4,000 red and white lights, along with a bespoke display on the Nottingham Council House façade.

Nottingham city centre isn't the only place to start its Christmas preparations early with Mansfield District Council putting up its lights two weeks ago.

Every year the authority begins hanging its lights up at the end of September to ensure they are ready for when the festive season is underway.

In Mansfield, 300 mini Christmas trees, 100 column decorations, half a mile of icicle lights across shop fronts and 30 decorations that hang across streets will go up, along with an "impressive" light curtain across West Gate and in the Buttercross area.

Apart from some tests, the lights will not be turned on until mid-November for the annual Big Switch On event, one of Mansfield's biggest events.
