Christmas family gatherings "need to be different" as NHS warn hugs and kisses are off the festive menu

Keep hugs and kisses inside your own household this Christmas – and “do the right thing” to steer clear of Covid.

That’s the message from local health chiefs, who are urging the public to follow the festive rules on social gatherings.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran say usual celebrations should be put on the back burner this year with rates of Covid transmission still high.

And they have warned family Christmas gatherings “need to be different” this year.

Lynne McNiven, Joint Director for Public Health, said: “2020 has been a really tough year, with restrictions meaning that we haven’t been able to spend time with our families and friends as we would normally.

“However, with the change to the guidelines for a few days over Christmas, it is important that we still remain vigilant.

“COVID-19 won’t take a break this Christmas, and so we can’t either.

“The best way of keeping yourself and your loved ones safe this Christmas is to stay at home with your own household.

“Any interaction with other households should, as far as possible, be outdoors.

“If you are meeting up with family and friends, try to remember: keep the amount of time spent together as short as possible; keep any bubble as small as possible; avoid travel and overnight stays unless absolutely unavoidable; and comply with all distancing and hygiene advice.

“Wash your hands regularly, wear a face mask or face covering, maintain social distancing and keep rooms well ventilated - no hugs or kisses for those outside your household.”

The five day relaxation, which ends on Sunday, December 27, will see previous restrictions returning in time for New Year.
