Christmas events could force people to vote in 'unusual' polling stations for general election

People across Leeds are being warned that they may not be able to vote in their usual polling station for the general election on Thursday, December 12.

The country will be heading to the polls in winter for the first time since 1923 after MPs overwhelmingly voted in favour of a snap election earlier this week.

With the big day just six weeks away, Leeds City Council is in the process of securing polling stations across the city.

However, Christmas events at regular polling stations such as schools, churches and village halls may mean that a number of 'unusual' venues will be selected instead.

Leeds City Council chief executive and returning officer Tom Riordan said: "It's always going to be a big logistical feat organising a large election covering eight constituencies and this time of year provides extra challenge in that some small venues we'd normally use for polling are already booked for Christmas activities.

"We have a lot of experience in running elections on this scale, including a number of regional counts.

"Our officers are working to secure replacements and venues will be found, but electors may find themselves voting in different, and more unusual locations than usual."

He also called upon the Cabinet Office and Electoral Commission to factor in the extra costs associated with a winter election, which is an almost unprecedented event.

The overnight count will take place at the First Direct Arena once again - just one night after Rod Stewart plays to a 14,000 capacity crowd.
