Christmas Day weather: Met Office predicts temperatures to plummet

Temperatures across the UK are set to plummet just in time for Christmas.

With temperatures dropping on Christmas Eve, the Met Office has warned that some parts of the country can be expected to see frost and fog on Christmas Day.

Temperatures should be near average to start Christmas week, and locally mild in the north, although they will tend to become colder in time for Christmas, especially in southern areas.

The Met Office said: "As a result, the risk of frost and fog increases, the fog slow to clear through the mornings, and perhaps lasting all day in some places.

"It is likely to remain settled for the final week of 2021, with an increasing risk of frost and fog for Christmas and New Year.

"Any unsettled spells are most likely for the northwest, with occasional stronger winds, and some showers or longer spells of rain."

Fog can be expected as early as tonight in Liverpool with thick clouds hovering over Merseyside for most of the week and continued risk of morning fog developing under any cloud breaks.

The poor visibility due to fog will take a while to clear tomorrow morning and a cloudy day is expected to follow across the region.

While it is expected to be quite cold, it is too early to predict whether or not it will snow on the big day, as snow predictions can only be made five days in advance by the Met Office.

But with snow being more likely January and March than in December, it is more probable that we will see snow after Christmas rather than during.
