Christmas Day to be hot and dry for most of Australia, says weather bureau

Most capital cities around Australia will enjoy temperatures close to 30C on Christmas Day.

Northerly winds mean that Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart will experience a hot, dry Christmas.

Adelaide will reach a top of 37C, Melbourne is expected to peak at 30C, and Sydney will reach 28C.

Despite easterly winds threatening showers for Brisbane, the temperature will still reach a warm 28C. And Perth will avoid the rain that is threatening parts of Western Australia as a result of a tropical low near the Kimberley that will move across the state this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Philip Landzogt said the bureau was “watching to see what the tropical low will do”.

“But Perth will be hot and 35 regardless,” he said.

“Over the northern parts of WA and the central region there is the possibility of some rain and thunderstorms associated with that tropical low though. Darwin will experience thunderstorms and a top of 32.”

However, for most of Australia, Christmas would be a traditional one, he said. That is, “hot and dry”.
