This year's Christmas bank holiday will not take place on December 25 as the big day falls on a Sunday. Instead, a 'substitute' weekday will become the official bank holiday for Christmas Day.
This means that this year, Christmas Day bank holiday will be observed on December 27. The New Year's Day bank holiday will not be held on January 1, but rather January 2.
As reported by The Liverpool Echo, your employer doesn’t have to give you paid leave on bank or public holiday. Bank holidays might also affect how and when your benefits are paid.

Here are this year's key dates. It's important to note Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are not bank holidays.
2022 bank holidays in the UK:
- Monday, December 26 - Boxing Day
- Tuesday, December 27 - Christmas Day (substitute day)
2023 bank holidays in the UK:
- Monday, January 2 (New Year's Day - substitute)
- Friday, April 7 (Good Friday)
- Monday, April 10 (Easter Monday)
- Monday, May 1 (Early May bank holiday)
- Monday, May 29 (Spring bank holiday)
- Monday, August 28 (Summer bank holiday)
