Christmas and New Year bin collection dates across Greater Manchester – in every borough

Councils across Greater Manchester have outlined their plans for bin collections over Christmas and the New Year.

With Christmas Day and New Year’s Day falling on a Saturday this year, many town halls will see fewer change to their schedules as there is a full Monday to Friday working week prior to the holiday weekend.

Bins are being collected on the same days as normal in the majority of areas.

All councils are still urging residents to keep recycling food, cardboard and paper and other recyclable items in their respective coloured bins.

Manchester

Bin collection days will not change for Christmas 2021-22.

Please put bins out on the usual days.

Residents can recycle real Christmas trees in January after removing any lights or decorations and also the wooden base or stand.

Leave the tree next to green bins on any of your green bin collection days in January or take it to your local tip or Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Those living in a flat or apartment, please speak to your caretaker or building manager.

If this is not possible, please send an email to: Christmas.Tree.Manchester@biffa.co.uk with your name and address, a description of the location where you’ll leave the tree and when you’ll be putting it there to be collected during January.

Artificial trees can not be recycled.

Residents can recycle real Christmas trees in the garden and food waste bin if it is chopped up or take it to your local recycling centre.

Trafford

Bins should be put out on normal collection day no later than 6.30am.

The council has instructed to put bins out as usual and park vehicles where they won’t obstruct collection trucks.

There will be no brown bin collections from December 20 to 31 because garden waste is reduced at this time of year most households will have enough space in their bin for extra food waste, winter temperatures help prevent food waste from breaking down and so the council can put extra effort into emptying other bins which can fill up more quickly at this time of year.

Real Christmas trees can be recycled in the brown bin if all decorations are removed, lights and the wooden base, then chop it up so it fits inside the brown bin with the lid fully closed.

If it is too large it can be taken to one of the household waste and recycling centres.

The household waste and recycling centres are open every day (except on December 25 and January 1) from 8am to 6pm.

Local centres are at Every Street in Bury (07881 386 829); Cemetery Road in Radcliffe (07881 386 876); and Lumns Lane in Salford (07881 386 572).

The council has asked residents to ensure that numbered bins are put at the normal collection point by 6.30am and returned to your property before the end of the collection day.

Green bin collections over the Christmas period will be suspended to allow the council to prioritise the collection of the other bins.
