Christine McGuinness says 'it feels like we've gone back two years' as autistic children struggle in lockdown

Christine McGuinness says it feels like her children have taken step back as they struggle with lockdown.

Christine, 32, and her husband Paddy McGuinness, 46, are parents to Felicity, and twins Leo and Penelope.

The couple found out earlier this year that three-year-old Felicty had autism just like her older siblings.

Speaking on Tuesday's Loose Women, Christine said that it was 'upsetting' to see her children's progress come to a halt during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Whether you've got children or not, this is a really difficult time, but certainly for children or adults with autism this is really affecting them," she said on the ITV show as she joined the panel via video link.

"It's quite common for autistic children to have development delays anyway... and all of the things they've struggled with that we've spent years and years trying to help them with, now it feels like we've gone back two years.

"Their speech isn't as good as it was, their eye contact isn't as good as it was.

"Trying to get them to engage in anything at all, even playtime, even doing something fun, they're not engaging the way they were

"It's upsetting and it's really quite difficult."

Christine added that the affect on her children and the family as a whole is "heartbreaking".

"But as a mum, a parent, a carer all I can do is be there for them, love them, support them as any mum would," she said.

The Real Housewives of Cheshire star has previously spoken about how the lockdown has made her closer to husband Paddy.

She said that she and the Top Gear host, 46, have been sharing things '50/50' around the house has stopped their bickering.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
