Christine Lagarde to run for second term as IMF chief

Christine Lagarde has confirmed her plans to run for a second term as managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Lagarde told France 2 television on Friday that she wanted to continue as the head of the organisation.

"I am candidate to a new mandate. I was honoured to receive from the start of the process the backing of France, Britain, Germany, China, Korea," she told on French television in an interview from Davos.

Chancellor George Osborne tweeted yesterday that he was “delighted to nominate" her for a new term.

Germany, China, France and Korea have also endorsed Christine Lagarde for another term as the head of the IMF.

The IMF formally began accepting nominations on Thursday for who will guide the global crisis lender for the next five years as Lagarde term in office ends on July 5.

In December Lagarde was set to go on trial in France for failing to prevent an alleged €400 million fraud when she was French finance minister in 2008. The IMF chief’s lawyer described the decision as “incomprehensible” and said Lagarde will appeal the decision.

"I feel that I always acted in the state's interest and within the law. I have my conscience for me in this affair. I hope the courts will agree with that," she told France 2.

Christine Lagarde has no obvious challengers and has said previously she was open to serving another term.
