Christina Grimmie dead: Suspect deliberately targeted singer, police say

Christina Grimmie was shot and killed while signing autographs for fans after a concert in Orlando - with the suspected attacker being by a 21-year-old man who travelled from another Florida city to target her, police have said .

Grimmie, a 22-year-old singer and former contestant of NBC’s singing competition The Voice, suffered critical gunshot wounds while signing autographs late on Friday evening. She was quickly transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.

Grimmie’s brother Marcus tackled the suspect stopping him from causing any more harm and probably saved lives, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said. During the struggle, the suspect intentionally shot and killed himself at the scene.

"There is no indication that they knew each other," Chief told reporters. He added that police will search through the suspect’s phone to identify a motive.

Grimmie had posted a video of herself shortly before the concert was scheduled to begin, encouraging fans to come see her perform.

The suspect was carrying two guns, two loaded magazines and a hunting knife on his person. His identity is expected to be released later.

A New Jersey native, Grimmie first drew attention several years ago for her YouTube videos featuring covers of pop songs. In 2014, she finished third on the The Voice, with Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine as her coach.
