Christian Yelich has 7 homers in 5 games against the Cardinals

It’s true. This post exists to deliver to you the fact contained in its headline: Brewers outfielder and reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich has hit seven home runs in his team’s five games against the St. Louis Cardinals to date in 2019. He hit one apiece in the four-game season-opening series in Milwaukee, then three more on Monday night.

It’s obviously just a weird small-sample fluke. Yelich played great against the Cardinals last season, but Yelich played great against a lot of teams last season — hence the MVP Award. I suppose there’s some chance the 2019 Cardinals are working off some outlandishly horrible scouting report on Yelich — “just throw the ball over the middle; this guy sucks!” — but that seems extremely unlikely. Monday’s trio of homers victimized three different St. Louis pitchers:

The Brewers have 14 more games against the Cardinals still to play in 2019, starting with two more in this series and three next week in St. Louis. If Yelich maintains this pace — and he won’t, obviously, but still — he will finish with 27 homers against the Cardinals alone.

St. Louis is currently 1-4 in games featuring Christian Yelich and 8-3 in all other contests. The Brewers hold an early 1 1/2-game lead in the NL Central entering play Tuesday.
