Christian siblings facing persecution in Iran given reprieve to stay in Scotland

A brother and sister who face persecution if they are sent back to Iran have been given a reprieve after a Home Office U-turn.

Aysan, 22, and her brother Armin, 15, fled their birth country of Iran in fear of their stepfather, who they said threatened to kill them.

Before coming to Scotland, the Christian siblings fled to Denmark because of religious persecution and domestic violence.

The Church of Scotland backed Aysan and Armin and welcomed news that their asylum claim will be heard in the UK.

Paul Cathcart, a deacon at Castlemilk Parish Church, Glasgow, said: “This has been a traumatic and stressful time for them and they will be able to sleep more soundly in their beds without fear of another knock at the door.”

Tracy Kirk, a children’s rights expert, said “I am delighted that Scotland can now provide a place of safety for Aysan and Armin while they seek asylum here.”
