Chelsea may have missed out on securing their first piece of silverware of the Frank Lampard era on Saturday, being beaten 2-1 by Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley, but there is plenty of excitement and optimism around Stamford Bridge ahead of next season.
That is because the Blues, who face German giants Bayern Munich in the second-leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Saturday, are making some shrewd moves in the summer transfer market.
The window may have only officially opened last week, but the Blues ensured they remained one step ahead of the curve by getting deals sewn up before the shutters on the transfer window had even been lifted.
First, the club sealed the signing of Morocco international Hakim Ziyech from Dutch giants Ajax before landing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner in a deal worth more than £50million.
The addition of Werner, who has already started to train with his new Chelsea teammates at the club's Cobham training base, is a real statement of intent by the Stamford Bridge club and underlines the club's desire to compete for the Premier League title next season.
In Werner, Chelsea have added a player to their ranks who will offer pace, athleticism and goals, with the 24-year-old having earned plenty of praise over the last few seasons in the Bundesliga.
During the 2019/20 campaign, Werner, who would have hoped to have led the line for Germany at this summer's European Championships had they not been called off because of the coronavirus pandemic, netted a total of 34 goals in 45 games across all competitions.
Statistics like that highlight just why Chelsea were so desperate to land him this summer.
And after just over week of training with his new teammates, one of them - Christian Pulisic - is already singing the praises of the Blues' newest arrival.
"He’s a very dangerous player," Pulisic told the club's official website, via Goal.
"I think he has some similar qualities to me and some of the attacking guys we have. He’s obviously very quick and very good in front of goal.
"He seems like a very humble guy. He wants to come in and wants to work.
"Playing against him has been a great experience and it’s going to be nice to have him on my team as well. So I’m definitely looking forward to that."
With Pulisic to have reached that verdict on Werner in just over a week, it shows just how good a player the Blues have managed to secure themselves.
And it is not just Pulisic that is a big fan of the Germany star, with former Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo, who guided the club to Champions League glory back in 2012, having also hailed the striker's talents.
“I’m a big fan of his and he’s developed really, really well as well," admitted Di Matteo in an interview with Chelsea's official club website.
"He’s a goal scorer, he scores goals, so he can guarantee a certain amount of goals for the team, which is very good, and he’s very pacey as well, he’s fast.”
