The NFL appears to be entering a golden age for elite pass-catching running backs and Christian McCaffrey could very well turn out to be the best of them. Right now there are a handful of otherworldly talents at the position that thrive both running and catching the ball. Last season, McCaffrey posted more explosive receiving plays (15 yards or more) than any of them, according to Pro Football Focus.
It was a very close race, but McCaffrey beat out Todd Gurley by one explosive play and David Johnson, Alvin Kamara and Saquon Barkley by two. Here’s how they stacked up in 2018.
Heading into 2019, we have McCaffrey ranked as the No. 3 running back in the league behind only Barkley and Gurley.
