Tottenham Hotspur completed their first signing of the summer transfer this week when the club confirmed the arrival of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton.
The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year-deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a fee north of £15 million.
Jose Mourinho had been a long-term admirer of the Danish international, having been linked with him back in January.
Hojbjerg was stripped of the captaincy at St Mary’s at the end of the season after making his desire to move away in the summer clear.
Once it was confirmed, Hojbjerg’s international teammate and former Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen sent a message to his friend.
“@SpursOfficial i know you know how to take good care of the Danes. So im sure you will do the same with @hojbjerg23 good luck.” he wrote on his Twitter page.
It now seems that the former Spurs man had his own role in ensuring that a transfer would go ahead.
According to the Athletic , Hojbjerg had a conversation with Eriksen before deciding to complete a move to Spurs, with his international teammates having nothing but good things to say about the club.
Eriksen spent six-and-a-half years at Tottenham between summer 2013 and January 2020, when he left for Inter Milan.
And Hojbjerg is himself expecting a long stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“What was very important for me is that I wanted to play in a club where I could see myself for many years, and Tottenham was just the one,” he said after signing.
“I'm very proud, happy, excited. There is a fantastic future ahead for the club and I wanted so much to be a part of that.”
