Christian Eriksen releases first photo since collapse as he issues defiant update from hospital bed

A defiant Christian Eriksen has issued an update on his current state while thanking all the well-wishers around the world for their support following his cardiac arrest.

The harrowing scenes on Saturday afternoon of the Denmark captain collapsing on the pitch in the country's Euro 2020 opener sent shockwaves through not only the football community but the wider public.

The 29-year-old Inter Milan playmaker fell to the turf and required CPR while his team-mates formed a barrier around him to protect his privacy while he underwent emergency treatment. He left the field awake and was taken to hospital.

When asked how close we were to actually losing Eriksen, team doctor Morten Boesen said "he was gone" before the first defib on the pitch brought him back.

On Sunday morning the Danish FA confirmed he was "stable" and on Monday the former Tottenham star issued a short first statement vowing he "won't give up".

But, on Tuesday morning, Eriksen uploaded the first photograph of himself since the incident occurred; a heartening smile and a thumbs up from his hospital bed.

The photo accompanied a stirring message in which he threw his support behind his Danish team-mates for the rest of the tournament.

"Hello everyone," his Instagram post began.

"Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family.

"I'm fine - under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations at the hospital, but I feel okay.

"Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches. Play for all of Denmark."

Denmark eventually lost that opening game against Finland, with Danish officials having since criticised the decision to carry on with the fixture following the distressing incident.

The Danes take on Belgium in their second Group B match at 5pm UK time on Thursday.
