Christian Eriksen received CPR on the pitch after a horror incident during Denmark vs Finland.
The Denmark midfielder, 29, collapsed during the first half of the Euro 2020 clash in Copenhagen.
Referee Anthony Taylor called medical staff onto the field and prolonged CPR was administered.
Eriksen's distraught teammates formed a barrier around him on the pitch at the Parken Stadium.
Players from both countries looked visibly upset, with fans in the crowd pictured in tears.
Eriksen's wife came on to the pitch and was consoled by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
The Finland players and match officials then left the pitch.
A tweet from UEFA said the match had been suspended due to a medical emergency.
In a later tweet, they said Eriksen had been transferred to hospital and was in a stable condition.
The tweet said: "Following the medical emergency involving Denmark's player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET.
"The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised."
Messages of support for Eriksen were pouring in on social media after the incident.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden tweeted: “Awful scenes at Denmark v Finland Euros game.
"Thoughts with Christian Eriksen and his family.”
His former club Tottenham tweeted: “All of our thoughts are with Christian Eriksen and his family.”
