Christian Eriksen is planning to join up with Denmark tomorrow as he prepares for an emotional return to the national team.

The midfielder has not played for his country since suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch during their match against Finland at Euro 2020 last summer.

Eriksen has since been fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator and is back playing club football in the Premier League with Brentford.

He was called up to the Denmark squad last week for friendlies against the Netherlands in Amsterdam and Serbia in Copenhagen, however it was feared his return would be scuppered after he caught Covid-19.

But Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand said last night: “Everything indicates - unless something unforeseen happens - that he is down here on Wednesday night and can train fully on Thursday and Friday.

“He is fine. He has had virtually no symptoms and he has passed two negative tests. So he is out of all restrictions.

“There are some follow-up tests that you always run, and we get the results from Wednesday morning. So we expect him to be down here on Wednesday night.

“I think he tested positive Tuesday or Wednesday last week. He has not been hit hard, but it has still cost four to five days of training.

“The plan is for him to be included on an equal footing with the others. We have to see how much progress he has made and how much he can play of the match against Holland [on Saturday].

“But he is 100 per cent ready to play against Serbia on Tuesday.”
