Christian Eriksen faces fresh transfer blow as Atletico Madrid opt for cheaper target

Christian Eriksen faces staying at Tottenham this summer after Atletico Madrid cooled their interest.

Eriksen admitted he wanted to leave the club after the Champions League final, seemingly setting his heart on a move to Real Madrid .

The Dane has one year remaining on his current deal and Spurs are reluctant to risk losing him for nothing.

Atletico were reported to have made a move for Eriksen over the weekend having already snapped up his former Tottenham teammate Kieran Trippier this summer.

But MARCA claims they are now prioritising the transfer of James Rodriguez.

Tottenham are believed to be looking for around £60m for Eriksen, while Rodriguez will cost less at £35m.

The Colombian international has spent the last two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich but they opted against a permanent switch.

But he has no future at the Bernabeu and Zinedine Zidane is likely to make that clear when Rodriguez reports back for pre-season training this week.

Atletico are ready to pounce and offer the 28-year-old the opportunity to stay in Madrid.

And that means Eriksen may end up staying in Tottenham unless a suitable offer comes in before the end of the transfer window.

Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in Eriksen but are unlikely to make a move unless Paul Pogba departs.

Real Madrid would also favour the Frenchman over Eriksen, with the Dane currently with the Spurs squad at the International Champions Cup.
