Christian Eriksen discharged from hospital following a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020

Christian Eriksen has been discharged from the hospital six days after he suffered a cardiac arrest during their opening Euro 2020 match against Finland.

Play between the two countries had to be suspended, described as a "medical emergency" after the terrifying ordeal in which the Inter Milan midfielder collapsed on the far side as a throw-in was being taken.

The Denmark players were understandably shaken as they gathered around their teammate to form a shield as the medics used CPR to treat the 29-year-old.

Play was suspended until 7:30pm at the Parken Stadion, two and a half hours after the original kick-off, the game resumed as Eriksen's condition was described as "stabilised".

During Denmark's second game against Belgium, during which Kevin De Bruyne made the difference, the ball was kicked out after 10 minutes as both sets of players and fans came together as a mark of respect.

Earlier yesterday it was announced that the playmaker would be fitted with a heart-starting device - an ICD.

Today, the Denmark National Team released a statement on Twitter that read: "Christian Eriksen has been through a successful operation and was today discharged from Righospitalet. Today he also visited the national team in Helsingor - and from there he will go home and spend time with his family."

"Thank you for the massive number of greetings - it has been incredible to see and feel," Eriksen added in the statement.

"The operation went well and I am doing well under the circumstances.

“It was really great to see the guys again after the fantastic game they played last night. No need to say that I will be cheering them on against Russia on Monday.”
