Christian Eriksen TV coverage sparks BBC apology after viewers horrified

The BBC has issued an apology to viewers over its TV coverage of Christian Eriksen's collapse during Denmark v Finland.

Denmark's Eriksen, 29, fell to the ground just before half time and was given CPR before being stretchered from the field - thankfully, awake and responsive by that stage.

While he received medical treatment, his team-mates gathered around him - forming a guard so prevent close-ups of what was going on - while cameras cut to his partner on the sidelines as she was consoled by Denmark captain Simon Kjaer and goalkeeper Kasper Schmichael.

The camera did then pan away from the pitch, with the BBC coverage cutting to Gary Lineker and Alex Scott back in the studio, but plenty of fans were unhappy with how much of the incident's aftermath was being aired on TV. The BBC say in-stadium coverage was controlled by Uefa as the host broadcaster.

With the game later restarting at 7.30pm and the BBC returning to their coverage, Lineker issued a swift apology.

He said: "We apologise to anyone who was upset by the images broadcast. In-stadium coverage is controlled by Uefa as the host broadcaster, and as soon as the match was suspended, we took our coverage off air as quickly as possible.”

Former England striker Lineker also apologised on Twitter, saying: "I understand some of you would have been upset with some of the images shown (we were too).

"Obviously these were the host pictures and out of our control. They should have stayed on a wide of the stadium. Apologies."

Eriksen was taken to a hospital in Copenhagen for further examinations and on Saturday was being described as awake and stable.

The match between Finland and Denmark was suspended for around 90 minutes before restarting.

Uefa say the game continued at the request of the players, who had reportedly spoken to Eriksen via video call from his hospital bed.

However, clearly affected by the events, Denmark lost the game 1-0.
