Christian Doidge's Wales debut dream dealt a blow by coronavirus cancellation

Christian Doidge’s dreams of earning a first Wales cap have been thrown into doubt after their friendly against the United States was called off due to the coronavirus.

The Dragons were due to face the USA on March 30, but the US Soccer Federation confirmed on Thursday that the game will now not go ahead along with their other scheduled matches in March and April.

MLS has also been suspended for 30 days as the bid to stop the spread of Covid-19 sees travel and social restrictions placed on countries around the globe.

Wales star Aaron Ramsay could also pose a risk after his Juventus teammate Danielle Rugani tested positive for the virus.

Doidge had been hopeful of being included in Ryan Giggs ’ squad for the first time after becoming the top scoring Welshman in British football with 18 goals for Hibs this season.

Giggs talked up Doidge’s chances in an interview in February and the number nine did his chances no harm by scoring against Aberdeen at the weekend.

Wales’ home friendly against Austria is still set to go ahead at Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium on March 27, and could still offer Doidge the chance to make his international debut.

But the FAW will continue to monitor the situation with no guarantee that the game will take place as more and more fixtures fall by the wayside.

Jonathan Ford, CEO of the FAW, said: “We are disappointed to see any postponement or cancellation of matches but understand that the health and safety of all fans, players and stakeholders are paramount.”
