Christian Benteke's goal against Arsenal will ease pressure on him, says Roy Hodgson

Roy Hodgson is confident Christian Benteke's goal and assist against Arsenal will lift the pressure the Crystal Palace striker has felt during his goalscoring drought.

Benteke's 17th-minute header at the Emirates Stadium was his first Premier League goal since April 28 last year when he netted in Crystal Palace's 5-0 win against Leicester, a goal drought lasting 358 days.

The goal came on his 200th Premier League appearance and preceded the striker setting up Wilfried Zaha for his second-half goal, which earned Palace a 3-2 victory against Arsenal.

Hodgson said after the game that he was pleased with Benteke's all-round performance, telling reporters: "He's more than just a goalscorer.

"His all-round performance today was fantastic. If he had played that way and someone else scored the goal, we shouldn't berate him in any way.

"I'm sure it's a weight off his mind, but the biggest weight off his mind is that, along with Wilf, he gave a good performance."

Two of Palace's goals, including Benteke's opener, came from set-pieces while Shkodran Mustafi had a day to forget in what was a poor defensive showing from the 27-year-old.

And Hodgson added: "We knew set plays would be a weapon, we have the right set of players to cause them damage.

"We knew it'd be a definite possibility in terms of scoring but you'd have to ask Unai [Emery] how he saw that situation on their defending.

"I can't say I am surprised because Arsenal's strength is their play going forward. Ozil, Mkhi, Ramsey on normal circumstances...That's a major, major force, in my opinion. It was important we nullified that - and we did that."
