Christian Benteke on how his Belgium goal can help him find form at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke is hoping that scoring for Belgium can kick start his season at Selhurst Park.

The Belgian international is yet to score so far this campaign, having played a part in seven Premier League matches and one Carabao Cup encounter. In fact, the striker scored just one goal over the entirety of the 2018/19 season, with that coming in the 3-2 win against Arsenal in April.

The 28-year-old got some rare minutes in international football on Thursday evening when he came on as a second half substitute in his nation's 9-0 victory over San Marino.

And the forward made the most of the opportunity, scoring one of Belgium's nine goals during the match. Benteke is hoping that that goal can now be used as a catalyst to him re finding his goalscoring form.

“I am very happy. Both for myself and for the team,” he told  Het Laatste Nieuws.

“It is a relief for me that I was allowed to participate in this match. Every time the national coach calls on me, I try to be there.

“I tried to give something back to him again. I was hungry for that, and it helped me in my head. It caused even more relief.

“I know my qualities and know what I can do, but there was the frustration of not having scored for a long time.

“I hope I get out of that negative spiral with this. I am taking that goal to Crystal Palace and hope to relaunch my season there.”
