Christian Benteke delivers frank assessment after Crystal Palace's humbling defeat at Tottenham

Christian Benteke said there were "no excuses" for Crystal Palace after a heavy defeat away against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Palace were well beaten at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Heung-min Son netting twice and Erik Lamela also on target in addition to a Patrick van Aanholt own goal as Spurs thrashed the Eagles 4-0.

But Benteke, who came off the bench in the humbling defeat, admitted that Palace deserved nothing from the game on a day to forget for the Eagles.

“They deserved the win and this afternoon, they were the better team," Benteke told Palace TV .

“We had a slow start, and soon it was 2-0 to them and we knew it was going to be difficult.

“There is no excuse because the starting XI was I think, strong, and we were also on a good run with two wins in a row and we wanted to keep it going, but unfortunately we were up against a top team and we can just blame ourselves."

However, the Belgian international said that Palace will need to put the result behind them quickly as they prepare for home games against Wolves and Norwich City over the next couple of weeks.

“I think now we have got two games in a row at home, and we have another tough team on Sunday, but hopefully we can get three points," he said.
