Christian Atsu to Celtic as Hoops 'approach' Newcastle for winger

Celtic have made a move to sign Christian Atsu before the deadline as Neil Lennon looks to strengthen his squad.

The Hoops boss is stepping up his bid for a winger after Mikey Johnston was injured during the win over St Johnstone.

And that has taken them to Newcastle to try and get Atsu in the door in the coming hours, according to Sky Sports.

He would add to Celtic's wide options with Mohamed Elyounoussi also injured while Scott Sinclair joined Preston.

But they also face competition from Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.

The Ghana international wages in the North-east aren't believed to be prohibitive.

It's understood his salary is in the region of £35k to £45k per week.

The 28-year-old started his career at Porto before Chelsea paid a fee of £3.5m for him in 2013.

He never made the breakthrough at Stamford Bridge and had loan spells at Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle before a permanent switch to St James' Park.

He's played 74 times over the last three years for the Toon and 22 of them have come this season.

Atsu has picked up 62 caps for his country and scored 10 goals.
