Christian Atsu targets 'many years' at Newcastle - but stresses importance of Rafa Benitez to United

Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu wants to stay on Tyneside for "many years" - although he has admitted that part of the attraction of playing for the Magpies is working under Rafa Benitez.

The Newcastle manager is entering the final week of his contract, which expires next Sunday, and he has so far opted against signing a new deal.

Benitez has also received a lucrative offer from Chinese side Dalian Yifang and, as things stand, appears set to leave the club this summer.

Atsu joined Newcastle, initially on a season-long loan from Chelsea in 2016 before making the move permanent in a £6.5million deal 12 months later, in order to work with Benitez.

And, speaking before the latest revelations about Benitez's uncertain future on Tyneside, the Ghanaian stressed he is content to remain at St James' Park - despite having received tentative interest from a host of European clubs.

"I'm very happy at Newcastle and I'm happy with the fans. I'm especially happy with Benitez, the staff and everybody at the club," Atsu said during an extensive interview with footballmadeinghana.com.

"I'd like to stay there as many years as possible but it will depend on me and my performances. I just need to do my work, do my job, and as many as years as I want I believe I can stay if I play really good."

Atsu is currently out in Egypt with the Ghana squad, who start their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign against Benin on Tuesday night.

in almost four decades, and has hinted that he - along with some of his team-mates - could retire if they fail to lift the trophy this summer.

“This [winning the title] is what the whole country wants," Atsu added when asked about this summer's AFCON.

"We have not won this trophy for 37 years despite all the good players this country has produced.

“I think if we get all the support we need, we can win it this year. Because, if we don’t win it, many people are going to retire. See, that is how Ghana football is going."
