Christian Atsu scouting report - Newcastle forward tipped for Nottingham Forest transfer

The latest player to be linked with a deadline day move to is Newcastle United forward .

Reports in the national media claim that the Magpies have offered the 28-year-old to the Reds on loan for the remainder of the season.

West Bromwich Albion have been reportedly interested in the signing of Atsu on loan, with the Baggies also credited with an interest in Hull winger Kamil Grosicki – a player also linked with Forest.

But what more do we know about the latest player tipped to move to the City Ground?

Name: Christian Atsu

Age: 28

Position: Winger/forward

Nationality: Ghana

Clubs: Atsu started his career in his home country Ghana, before moving to Portugal to join Porto’s academy in 2009.

He progressed through the club’s youth ranks to reach the first-team, and had a loan spell with Rio Ave before signing a permanent deal with Chelsea in 2013.

Straight after moving to Stamford Bridge, Atsu was loaned out to Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem, and later had temporary stints with Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle before signing for the Magpies permanently in 2017.

By the numbers: Despite having four years under contract at Chelsea, Atsu failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Blues.

The 28-year-old has made 113 appearances for Newcastle since his initial loan stint at St James’ Park, and has bagged eight goals as well as chipping in with nine assists for his team mates.

In a total of 237 senior appearances in his career, Atsu has scored 22 goals, with three of those coming in the Premier League, and has also provided 26 assists.

International caps: Atsu has plenty of experience on the international stage, with 60 caps to his name for Ghana and three of those coming in the World Cup in 2014.

Atsu made his debut in a 7-0 World Cup qualifying win over Lesotho, where he scored and made one assist in a 23-minute cameo.

He has since gone on to score 10 goals for his country, including three across Ghana’s 2013 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations campaigns.

Strengths: Atsu is a player who links to play on the shoulder of opposition defences, and has pace to burn to run in behind.

While his goalscoring record may not be the most eye-catching, he has proven to be a team player in providing regular assists for his team mates.
