Christian Atsu scores for Newcastle United reserves to remind Steve Bruce he's an option

Newcastle United Under-23s were beaten 2-1 at Leeds' Thorp Arch in Premier League 2.

United went into the game looking to complete a double over Leeds after triumphing 4-3 back in November at Whitley Park.

The defeat keeps United's youngsters rooted to the bottom of the table at second string with Chris Hogg's side also enduring a difficult season, just like the first-team.

United went a goal down when Oisin McEntee conceded a penalty and Joe Gelhardt tucked home on 18 minutes.

Leeds doubled their advantage when Charlie Cresswell headed home from a corner to leave Newcastle chasing the game.

With two first half minutes remaining Christian Atsu poked home Tom Allan's cross to give Newcastle hope.

Atsu offered Steve Bruce a glimpse of what he can do with the Ghana international eligible to play in the first-team after gaining a place back in the 25-man Premier League squad.

However, despite Elliot Anderson having a couple of chances, Newcastle couldn't force the issue to take a point.

Hogg did not select Matty Longstaff suggesting he could be involved in the first-team squad for Brighton this week.

UNITED: Langley, Barrett, Francillette, McEntee, Cross, Young, Saivet, Anderson, Wilson, Atsu, Allan.

Referee: David Richardson (West Riding)
