Christian Atsu rocked by hamstring injury and faces scan to discover extent of damage

Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu has picked up a hamstring injury at the African Cup of Nations.

The Ghana international was injured in the 0-0 draw with Cameroon in the Group F encounter in Ismailia and was forced to head to hospital for a scan.

Ex-Chelsea man Atsu came off after just 14 minutes and left the field clutching the back of his right leg.

Atsu was already set to return back to pre-season later than his team-mates but faces further assessment on the injury ahead of the summer schedule.

He already looks set to miss Ghana's final group game with Guinea Bissau.

Atsu has previously struggled with a knee injury and required an operation last year.

Speaking of that particular injury he said: "The fans did not realise.

“I actually lost a lot of strength in my knee.

“I wasn’t balanced and I was using my right leg more.

“I am still doing strength work to make the leg stronger.”

Newcastle United's medical team are in communication with Ghana's back-room staff on the matter.
