Christian Atsu makes plea to Rafa Benitez after first start in Premier League in 11 weeks

Christian Atsu has spoken of his relief after getting his first Newcastle United start since February.

The Ghana winger had not been named in the opening line-up since the 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but got his chance in a left-wing role away to Brighton this weekend.

Atsu put in a hard-working shift against the Seagulls, and admitted he was just glad to be back in the side after the 1-1 draw against Chris Hughton's side.

The former Chelsea man had vowed at the start of the season to chalk up his best tally of goals and assists but is yet to get off the mark in terms of those statistics.

Speaking after the game Atsu said: "I’m always ready to give my best for the team whenever I’m called

"So, I’m always prepared to give everything

"And, I’m very happy I got some minutes in my legs

"I’m very happy with my performance, though I couldn’t create or score.

"But, I’m really working hard on it, trying to be my best for the team."

Atsu will hope to retain his place for the important game with Liverpool on Saturday night.
