Chrissie Squires: Mum of Edinburgh murder victim Mark Squires dies three years after son was killed

The heartbroken mum of Edinburgh murder victim Mark Squires has died three years after her son was killed.

Chrissie Squires suffered a heart attack at a city care home, surrounded by photos of her late son, on Tuesday evening. She was 77-years-old.

Her son Mark died in 2017 after being attacked as he walked home from a fundraising event at the Longstone Hearts supporters' club. Nico Allan (26) was given a life-sentence and is currently serving his sentence at Addiewell prison in West Lothian.

Prior to his death he care for Chrissie at the home they shared in Broomhouse, and his brother Colin told the Daily Record how she never really recovered from his death.

He said: "It broke her heart, Mark dying.

"When it happened she already had dementia, but it wasn't too bad. After it she just went downhill."

Colin added: "The last thing she said to me was ‘what date is it?’ and she usually never said anything like that - but it was the 13th, Mark’s birthday.

“It was a bit strange she said that. I don’t know if it came to her or what.

“Even the staff at the home were saying they’re going to miss her because she’s a character.”

Colin says that his mum was a popular figure in the local community and her death has hit everyone hard – his sisters Sharon and Susan in particular.

He said: "She’d help everybody and anybody. She’d go to the shops and chat to everybody for ages.

“If they had parties at New Year, everyone would come, all Mark’s pals. Even now when I go into the shops people are saying ‘sorry for your loss’.

“She’d see most of her family quite a lot, they’d always be at the house. She couldn’t get rid of them half the time. She worked all her life too.”

He added: "Susan’s inconsolable. We were at the undertakers and her legs were shaking away. She’s just not coping. Of the three of us now, she’s the worst. She’s the youngest now.”
