Chris Wilder sacked by Middlesbrough one year on from Nottingham Forest admission

Middlesbrough have sacked Chris Wilder as manager after 11 months in charge.

The former Sheffield United boss replaced Neil Warnock at the Riverside in November 2021, but struggled to turn the fortunes around. Middlesbrough sit 22nd in the Championship after 11 league games, losing five.

Wilder's dismissal comes following Saturday's 1-0 defeat at bottom side Coventry City on Saturday, with the decision made on Monday morning in a statement. It read: “Middlesbrough Football Club have terminated the contract of manager Chris Wilder with immediate effect.

"Leo Percovich will take over first team affairs in the interim basis, assisted by Craig Liddle, Mark Tinkler and Lee Cattermole. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Chris and his staff for all their hard work over the past 11 months.”

Wilder was previously strongly linked with a move to Nottingham Forest following Chris Hughton's departure little over a year ago. The 55-year-old had admitted at the time he would have been interested in the job, but Steve Cooper was ultimately appointed.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Wilder said at the time: “You’ve got to respect the people in charge, what direction they want to take their clubs. I understand that.

“We all know what a fabulous club Nottingham Forest is, whether you go there as a player, as a manager, or whether you go there to watch games.

“It very much reminds me of Sheffield United, but Sheffield United have not got the two stars on their badge.

“You’ve got to respect the history as well and I’m a historian in terms of looking at managers as well. Sir Alex Ferguson is my favourite manager of all time, and the best, but when you’re from my era, you look at what Mr Clough did at Derby and then moving to Nottingham Forest.

“It’s a fabulous club and I would have been interested in talking to them. It looks like they’ve quickly made an appointment."
