Chris Wilder issues Sheffield United injury update ahead of Newcastle United clash

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder is hopeful both defender Jack O'Connell and midfielder John Fleck will be available to face Newcastle United on Sunday.

The pair have been influential in the Blades' surprise bid to qualify for European football next season but missed out on Wednesday's 0-0 draw at Aston Villa through injury.

The Blades moved up to sixth in the Premier League table following their point at Villa Park but arguably should have won all three having seen a goal not given despite the ball crossing the Aston Villa goal-line.

Nonetheless, they will hope to return to winning ways when they travel to an empty St James' Park on Sunday as they look to avenge December's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle at Bramall Lane.

And Wilder is confident Fleck will be able to return to action, while he says they must wait on O'Connell's progress ahead of Sunday.

"It's a difficult one from my point of view. We are not a Man City who can pick a team an hour before kick-off," Wilder told Yorkshire Live.

"We have to work on stuff, we have to organise stuff to put plans in place to compete, so that coming out was disappointing.

"Fortunately, they are contact injuries and not soft tissue injuries.

"The commitment of both players - Flecky goes in for a challenge at Hull City in the last minute and I am looking at him thinking you can't do that, but he trains and plays in that way and that's taken him though his period at Sheffield United.

"Jack O'Connell collided in the last minute of a session on Monday.

"I believe Flecky will be back for Sunday, Jack we are just waiting on."
