Chris Waddle reveals why Peter Beardsley was left disappointed at Kevin Keegan's testimonial

Newcastle United legend Chris Waddle has revealed why Peter Beardsley was left disappointed after Kevin Keegan's testimonial for the Magpies.

The future United manager made a dramatic exit from St James' Park by helicopter on May 17, 1984, following a clash with former Liverpool in his honour.

The Magpies earned a creditable 2-2 draw against the side who would go on to lift the European Cup 13 days later, with Keegan and Terry McDermott both getting on the scoresheet.

With the scoreboard reading 'Auf Wiedersehen, Kev', Keegan was then whisked off by helicopter for a invitation-only reception at Gosforth Park Hotel.

Waddle revealed team-mate Peter Beardsley had asked the retiring Toon Legend before the game if he could keep his shirt following the testimonial.

However, the strike partner was left disappointed following a crafty intercept by a security guard.

Speaking on 'Colin Murray's 52' podcast, Waddle explained: "We were all standing pitchside and it was bloody freezing as it is up there, and we had to wait for Kevin Keegan to get in the helicopter.

"He was only going up the road to Gosforth Park Hotel, but we had to stand and wait.

"I always remember the story Peter Beardsley wanted Kevin's shirt for his last game, and as Kevin got in the helicopter he took it off and gave it to the security guard and said 'give it to Peter Beardsley'.

"Peter Beardsley never got it."

Keegan enjoyed a two-year spell on Tyneside following spells at Liverpool, Hamburg and Southampton.

The two-time European Footballer of the Year helped the Magpies secure promotion to the top flight in his final season, and scored in his last competitive outing against Brighton at St James' Park.

Waddle spent five seasons with United before leaving for Tottenham in 1985, and he revealed just how much of a transformation Keegan inspired in his short stay at the club.

He said: “That day was amazing. I signed with Newcastle and two-and-a-half years later I'm a regular in the team, and Kevin Keegan walks through the door.

"We were terrible at that time, we were shocking. We had about eight Geordies in the team, and all of a sudden we get to Madeira in pre season.

"We heard whispers Kevin Keegan signed. We were like shut up, he's not going to sign for us!

"We got back, and he walked into the training ground. The place just took off.

"We were probably getting 21,000 or 22,000 if that, Keegan signed and we've come back and there's 36,000 with 20,000 outside.

"The standards of the club, everything lifted. It was the old big baths then and there was champagne.

"No disrespect, I thought we were never going to get a glass of champagne, maybe a drop of Brown Ale.

"I was sitting there in the bath with Keegan, Terry McDermott, Peter Beardsley, and we've all got a bottle of champagne. I was thinking I can't believe this."
